George
Henry
Emergency
Room Nurse
"Nursing
has given me the freedom I enjoy and the excitement I want in a
career."
From
transporting critically ill patients by ambulance to traveling the
country caring for patients, George Henry has been on the move in
his nursing career. He may have been destined for this exciting
career path as a nurse. Ever since his high school days when he
volunteered as an emergency medical technician and firefighter,
George has had jobs that give that adrenaline rush of excitement.
After working in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman in a naval
hospital and on board a ship, he moved to Vermont and received his
bachelors degree in nursing from the University of Vermont.
George
graduated from UVM and met his wife, also a nurse, while working
in a medical intensive care unit. The pair began their life journey
together as travel nurses, first in Philadelphia then moving on
to Orlando and Albany. George and his wife enjoyed the freedom and
opportunity to explore different areas that life as travel nurses
provided. After their travels, George settled down (just a little!)
and returned to Burlington where he worked in the surgical intensive
care unit and the emergency room at Fletcher Allen Heath Care for
ten years.
In
2001, George got the travel bug once again and began working at
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in the cardio-thoracic intensive
care unit, caring for patients after heart surgery. He taught patients
about changing their eating and exercise habits, decreasing stress
and quitting smoking, to help them lead longer, healthier lives.
Today
George works as a nurse on the Fletcher Allen Coordinated Transport
team transporting patients by airplane and ambulance. This fast-paced
job requires George to think on his feet as he transports patients
in critical condition in and out of hospitals. He also works in
the ER at night at Copley Hospital.
And
if the excitement from his nursing career hasnt been enough,
George still finds time to serve as an EMT and volunteer firefighter
in the Essex Fire Department. Next year, George and his wife hope
to travel with their family to Australia and spend a year in the
Outback, because as a nurse, you can work anywhere in the world!
